Berlin
Alt-art, clubs and layers of history, side by side.
Berlin is the one European capital that refuses to behave like the others — Cold War scars on every corner, but also Europe’s most creative, alternative scene. From Berghain to the Brandenburg Gate, Turkish markets to Bauhaus museums, Berlin doesn’t fit on a single postcard.
Best time to visit
May–September is the best window: 18–27°C, parks full, lake breaks. July–August is festival season but Berghain queues are murder. December: Christmas markets are magic (Gendarmenmarkt is the prettiest), but -2°C. January–February is brutal (-5°C, grey) and hotels are cheapest. Karneval der Kulturen (late May) is worth catching.
How many days?
4–5 days is balanced: 1 day historical (Brandenburg, Reichstag, Holocaust Memorial), 1 on Museum Island (Pergamon closed until 2027 — go Neues + Bode), 1 in East Berlin (East Side Gallery, Kreuzberg, RAW), 1 for Charlottenburg + Tiergarten. 3 days squeezed = you miss the nightlife. 7 days lets you day-trip Potsdam (Sanssouci) and Sachsenhausen memorial.
What to see
Brandenburg Gate + Reichstag (dome free, online booking required), Holocaust Memorial, Berlin Wall remains (East Side Gallery 1.3 km of murals, Mauerpark, Bernauer Strasse Memorial), Checkpoint Charlie (touristy but Mauermuseum is decent), Museum Island (Neues, Bode, Alte Nationalgalerie), TV Tower (look from below, don’t go up — Park Inn rooftop is cheaper). Neighborhoods: Kreuzberg (Turkish + alternative), Prenzlauer Berg (cafés), Friedrichshain (clubs + RAW), Mitte (galleries).
Food & drink
Currywurst (Curry 36 Mehringdamm is the classic), döner (Mustafas Gemüse Kebap = long line, Rüyam = solid alternative), Kreuzberg Turkish Market (Tue + Fri) for fresh produce + börek. Brunch: Markthalle Neun (Thursday street-food night is legendary). Beer: Berliner Weisse (with raspberry or woodruff syrup — unique), Augustiner. Vegan capital: 100+ fully vegan spots. East-German Soviet vibe: Zur letzten Instanz, the oldest restaurant.
Getting around
BVG covers U-Bahn + S-Bahn + tram + bus on one ticket. Single €3.50, day pass €9.90, 7-day €39. BER airport: FEX train, 30 min, €4.40 to Hauptbahnhof. Berlin is huge — walking won’t cut it; bike or BVG. Uber works but BVG is usually faster. U-Bahn runs 24h Fri–Sun; night buses cover weekdays.
Things to watch out for
Teens with “sign this petition” clipboards are pickpocketing — especially around Brandenburg. BVG ticket inspectors wear plain clothes — fare-dodging fine is €60 + embarrassment. For Berghain: wear black, small group, don’t look drunk, expect a 3-hour line, and accept you might not get in. Late-night East Berlin stations aren’t calm — stay aware. Späti (late-night corner shops) sell beer to drink in the park — perfectly legal.
Budget estimate
Economy €60–90/day (hostel, döner + Späti, BVG day pass). Mid €120–180/day (3★ hotel, mixed food, 2–3 museums). Luxury €300–600/day (4–5★, fine dining). 5-day mid trip €700–1,000 (flights excluded). Flights from Europe €40–200 (Ryanair/Easyjet/Eurowings). Berlin Welcome Card with 48/72h transit + museum discounts pays off only if you’re hitting 2+ museums. Museum Island ticket €19 single, €25 combo — go combo if you’re visiting more than one.
