Reykjavik
Northern lights, volcanoes and an eerie silence.
Reykjavik is the world’s northernmost capital — a small town of 130k that holds all of Iceland’s social life. The real Iceland adventure is outside: Golden Circle, South Coast, Blue Lagoon, northern lights (Sept–March). 1–2 days for Reykjavik, 5–7 more for car-rental + Ring Road.
Best time to visit
June–August summer: 12–18°C, midnight sun (around June 21 the sun never sets), all roads open — but 200% tourists and prices. September–March northern lights (aurora) season: best October–February, needs clear skies + solar activity. December dark (4 hours of daylight) but Christmas + thermal + aurora is magical. March–May shoulder: still aurora chance + lower prices + lengthening days. February always brutal (-5 to 5°C).
How many days?
Reykjavik alone: 1–2 days enough (small city). 4–5 days: Golden Circle (Þingvellir + Geysir + Gullfoss waterfall) + Blue Lagoon + South Coast (Seljalandsfoss + Skógafoss + Reynisfjara black sand beach). 7–10 days: Ring Road tour (1,300 km around the country) — summer only, own car or organized tour. Layover-only (Icelandair stopover): 1–3 days free.
What to see
In Reykjavik: Hallgrímskirkja church (tower view — 1,200 ISK), Harpa concert hall (free, glass-architecture), Sun Voyager sculpture, Tjörnin pond, Laugavegur main shopping street. Public museums: National Museum, Settlement Exhibition (Viking remains). Thermal: Sky Lagoon (new, premium 8,000 ISK ~55€), Blue Lagoon (touristy classic 50–100€ — book hours ahead). Outside: Golden Circle (Þingvellir UNESCO parliament site + Geysir + Gullfoss waterfall), South Coast (Seljalandsfoss waterfall you walk behind + Reynisfjara black sand beach), Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (5 hours). Lesser known: Hvalfjörður tunnel area, Snæfellsnes Peninsula (mini Iceland), Westfjords (need to fly).
Food & drink
Lamb is Iceland’s signature — flock outnumbers people: Þrír Frakkar, Grillmarkaðurinn. Plokkfiskur (fish + mashed potato — comfort food). Skyr (yogurt-like, now a world brand, breakfast staple). Pylsur (lamb hot dog) — Bæjarins Beztu street stand is classic (Bill Clinton, Anthony Bourdain ate there). Hákarl (fermented shark — buried 5–6 months, smells of ammonia — try once, never again). Cinematic black rye bread (rúgbrauð) baked in geothermal earth. Drinks: Brennivín (caraway liquor), Einstök beer. Restaurants very pricey: fish + drink 4,500–7,000 ISK (30–45€). Supermarket (Bónus, orange-pig logo) is 50% cheaper — cook your own.
Getting around
Inside Reykjavik: Strætó bus 490 ISK ~3.30€ single, day pass 1,870 ISK ~12€. City is small — walkable. Outside: car rental is mandatory (Hertz, Avis, Blue Car). Summer 50–100€/day, winter 80–150€ (4×4 recommended). Full Ring Road tank: 80–100€ (petrol 320 ISK/L ~2.10€). Bus: Strætó intercity is cheap but slow + limited. Keflavík airport (KEF) is 50 km away — Flybus 3,999 ISK ~26€ 50 min, taxi 18,000 ISK (~120€!).
Things to watch out for
Weather changes by the hour: rain + sun + snow in one day. Waterproof shell + thermal base + gloves year-round. Driving: F-roads (highland off-road) need 4×4 and only open after late June; insurance excludes gravel + sand + river-crossing damage. Speed limit 90 km/h is strict (radar everywhere). Aurora isn’t guaranteed — give it 3 nights. Blue Lagoon: book days in advance, no walk-ins. EU/UK passports visa-free 90 days. No tipping — service included. Currency krona (ISK) — cards work everywhere, no need for cash.
Budget estimate
