Santorini is a caldera island — a massive volcanic eruption 3,600 years ago (likely the Atlantis inspiration). Whitewashed houses + blue domes are real, but Oia’s 5-m-wide lanes at noon in summer are unwalkable (Instagram + cruise). 3 days sees the island, 5 days tastes it. Combine with another Greek island.

Best time to visit

May and September–October ideal: 22–28°C, manageable crowds, normal prices. June–August 30°C+ + cruises + Oia sunset 5,000+ people (no spots, arrive 6 PM). November–March 70% of the island closes (hotels + restaurants), only Fira open + cold + windy. Late April and October are golden shoulder — low rain + half-empty island. Greek Orthodox Easter (April) is amazing locally but hotels packed.

How many days?

3–4 days island + Athens or another island = 7–10 day route. Day 1 Fira (capital — Telesilla 9-km clifftop walk to Oia, 4 hr, arrive before sunset), Day 2 Oia + Ammoudi Bay seafood evening, Day 3 Akrotiri archaeology (Pompeii-like 1600 BC Minoan city under ash) + Red Beach + Perissa black sand, Day 4 volcano + hot springs boat (3 hr €30). A 6–8-hr cruise stop only sees Oia + Fira — insufficient. 1 week + adding Naxos/Paros makes sense.

What to see

Oia (north tip — white houses + blue domes, the Instagram cliché is real, empty at 7 AM + cruise-packed after 6 PM). Fira (capital + main port + airline — caldera-view). Akrotiri archaeological site (1600 BC Minoan city under ash — Greece’s Pompeii, €12). Ancient Thera (Mesa Vouno hill — Hellenistic ruins, panorama). Beaches: Red Beach (closed 2024+ landslide — view from rocks only), Black Beach Perissa (volcanic sand), Vlychada (dramatic cliffs). Caldera boat (Nea Kameni volcano walk + hot-springs swim — €30–40). Lesser known: Pyrgos (highest village — no Oia crowds), Megalochori (traditional village), Akrotiri Lighthouse (sunset, no crowd).

Food & drink

Tomatokeftedes (local tomato fritters — Santorini’s tiny sweet red on volcanic soil). Fava (yellow split-pea purée — Santorini PDO). Atriotiki dakos (Cretan rusk + tomato + cheese). Fresh seafood at Ammoudi Bay (below Oia — 200 steps down, waterside tables). Souvlaki/gyros €4–5 classic. Local wine: Assyrtiko grape (volcanic mineral white — dry + acid), Vinsanto (sweet sun-dried). Restaurants: Selene (Pyrgos — fine dining €130 tasting), Ammoudi Fish Tavern (sea right there €50–80/person), Lucky’s souvlaki Fira (€8 cheap local favorite). Wine tour: Santo Wines (Pyrgos — caldera-view 5-pour tasting €25).

Getting around

Airport (JTR) tiny — from Athens 45-min flight €50–150 (Aegean) or Piraeus ferry 5–8 hr €50–90. High-speed catamaran (SeaJets, Blue Star) 5 hr €65–90. Cross-island KTEL bus cheap (€1.80–3) but limited — rent ATV/quad €30–50/day or car €40–80/day. Scooter requires license (international permit recommended). Oia–Fira 11 km / 25 min by car. Cable car Fira–Old Port €6 (cruise dock). Port to Akrotiri taxi €25.

Things to watch out for

Oia sunset cliché cost: 6–8:30 PM lanes are impassable, restaurants/bars €50+ minimum for the view. Arrive at 4 PM and lean against the steps facing down the caldera. Cruise days (typically Tue/Thu) bring 4–6 ships = 12,000+ extra people. Book hotels 6 months ahead in summer. Caldera "infinity pool" suite Instagram cliché €500/night+ — Pyrgos/Megalochori are mid + quiet alternatives. Roads winding + narrow — ATV crashes are the #1 tourist incident. Take full insurance. Greek ferry cancellations from wind (Meltemi summer northerly) — return a day before your flight. Cards widely accepted but small tavernas cash (€).

Budget estimate

Economy €80–140/day (Perissa/Kamari hotel — non-caldera, taverna, bus). Mid €180–350/day (Imerovigli/Fira 3★ caldera-view, restaurants, 1 tour). Luxury €600–3,000/day (Canaves Oia, Grace, Katikies — caldera suite + private pool €800–2,500/night). 5-day mid trip €1,200–2,000. Flights from Europe direct in summer €100–300, winter via Athens €150–400. Hotels: caldera side (Oia, Imerovigli, Fira) 2–4× pricier + view, Perissa/Kamari beach side 50% cheaper + local. Akrotiri archaeology €12 + Ancient Thera €4. Wine tour €25–60. Cruise call: cable car port–Fira €6, donkeys (banned since 2018+ over animal-welfare concerns) — walk 588 steps free.
