Venice is unrepeatable — 118 islands, 400 bridges, zero cars. The cliché is true, but San Marco at noon in summer is terrifying. Sunrise streets to yourself + 9 PM lit canals = the real Venice. 2 days for the main island, 4 days when you add the lagoon islands.

Best time to visit

April–May and September–October ideal: 18–24°C, manageable crowds. July–August 32°C+ + humidity + smell (canals reek in summer heat) + tourist explosion. November–March cheap + quiet but acqua alta (high water) — 60–100 days/year St. Mark’s floods (wooden walkways set up, buy boots). February Carnival (mask festival — pricey + packed; love it or skip the city). Rain in winter + fall.

How many days?

2 days minimum, 4 days comfortable (incl. lagoon islands). Day 1 San Marco + Doge’s Palace + Rialto + Museo Correr, Day 2 Dorsoduro (Accademia + Peggy Guggenheim) + Cannaregio local lanes, Day 3 lagoon: Murano (glass) + Burano (colored houses + lace) + Torcello (old cathedral), Day 4 Lido beach or Padua/Verona day trip. A "stopover Venice" is tragic — book at least 2 nights.

What to see

St. Mark’s Square + Basilica (Byzantine mosaics — free but long queue, online skip-the-line €5) + bell tower (€10 elevator, panorama — go early). Doge’s Palace (Gothic Venetian Republic — Bridge of Sighs to dungeon, €30). Rialto Bridge (1591). Accademia (Venetian painting — Tintoretto, Titian, Canaletto, €12). Peggy Guggenheim Collection (modern art villa — Pollock, Picasso, €16). Lesser known: Scuola Grande di San Rocco (Tintoretto’s Sistine — 60+ giant canvases, €10), Libreria Acqua Alta (canal-side bookstore with books in a bathtub), San Giorgio Maggiore bell tower (Palladio church, view better than San Marco + free 5-min boat + €8 tower), Castello + Arsenale (local + quiet), Murano + Burano + Torcello triple-island via vaporetto (€9.50/75 min or €25 day pass).

Food & drink

Cicchetti (Venetian tapas — bacalà mantecato/whipped cod, sarde in saor/sweet-sour sardines, baccalà — go to Bacaro/All’Arco/Cantine del Vino già Schiavi, pieces €1.50–4). Risotto al nero di seppia (squid-ink black risotto). Pasta alle vongole (clams). Fegato alla veneziana (calf liver + onions). Sweets: tiramisu (origin: nearby Treviso), fritole (Carnival fried dough). Wine: Prosecco (Venice region origin) + Spritz (Aperol/Campari + Prosecco + soda — Venice classic €4–6). Restaurants: Osteria alle Testiere (12-seat seafood, book 1 month), Antiche Carampane (local classic), Vino Vero (cicchetti + wine). Avoid touristic squares’ €30 "menus" — real local €12–18 pasta + €10 main. Espresso standing €1.50 / sitting €4.

Getting around

Vaporetto (water bus — ACTV) single €9.50 (75 min), 24h €25, 72h €40, 7-day €65 — for 2+ nights, get the pass. Line 1 stops everywhere on the Grand Canal (slow + scenic), Line 2 fast. Walking is the way — Google Maps gets confused with bridges + islands, Maps.me works better. Gondolas €80 daytime / €100 evening for 30 min (up to 6 people share). Traghetto (gondola canal-crossing) €2 — 5-min local experience. Airport (VCE Marco Polo) — Alilaguna water bus €15 / 1.5 hr or bus + ATVO Piazzale Roma €10 / 25 min + vaporetto. Water taxi €90+ — fast but pricey.

Things to watch out for

Since 2024 day-trippers pay a €5 access fee on certain dates (overnight hotel guests exempt, register online). Restaurants’ "coperto" cover charge €2–4/person is automatic + legal. Music service charge at Piazza San Marco cafés is €10/person — a small espresso seated becomes €18; stand at the bar. Acqua alta November–February — hotels post warnings, buy boots €15. Counterfeit-bag street vendors — buyers fined €1,000. Pizza-by-the-slice in main areas is plastic — every neighborhood has 1 respectable spot (Antico Forno in Dorsoduro). Hotel A/C limited + ground-floor rooms damp + mosquitoes. Selfie sticks banned around the Basilica.

Budget estimate

Economy €100–160/day (hostel/Mestre mainland hotel + 8-min train, supermarket + cicchetti, vaporetto). Mid €200–350/day (3★ on the island, restaurants, 2 museums + vaporetto pass). Luxury €600–2,500/day (Gritti Palace, Hotel Danieli, fine dining). 4-day mid trip €1,000–1,700. Flights from Europe €60–250 direct. Hotels: San Marco pricey + central, Cannaregio mid + local, Dorsoduro mid + arty, Mestre cheap but 2 ferries/day. Museum pass: Doge’s Palace + 3 museums €30, Chorus 14-church €14. Gondola €80–100 shared. Carnival mid-February prices 2–3×.
